I was introduced to Andrew by a friend who dubbed him as nothing short of magical. After experiencing his expertise firsthand, I couldn't agree more. Andrew's mastery of the human body and its intricacies truly feels like a kind of magic. I've been to other specialists for my chronic upper back and neck pain, but Andrew is different. He focuses on treating the actual problem, not just masking the symptoms. For the first time, I walked out of an acupuncture session and went back to exercising without feeling any pain. It was a game-changer. I feel as if I've been given a brand new back. Honestly, I never thought a life without back pain was possible until now. While I was also working with Andew some other health issues came up that couldn’t be diagnosed by western medicine. His thoughtful and holistic approach immediately made me feel understood and valued. Throughout our sessions, he would patiently explain the various points he was working on or the sensations I was experiencing, shedding light on what was going on internally within my body. Thanks to him, I now have a deeper appreciation for how imbalances in one area can send ripples throughout the entire system. He was able to find the root cause, guiding me slowly but surely on the path to recovery. I feel blessed to have met Andrew, he really has changed my life and I’m grateful for that.

I would strongly (strongly!) recommend Acupuncture for Athletics for both athletes and non-athletes alike. Not only does Andrew help with injury recovery, pain management, and stress relief, but he creates a relaxing and positive environment that enhances the work that he does and leads you to feel better both physically and mentally after each visit. And beyond acupuncture and massage, Andrew goes the extra mile to provide guidance on how to address specific pain-points and injuries, or to simply ensure that you are feeling and performing your best. Again, I can't recommend Acupuncture for Athletics enough!

I came to Andrew after nearly six excruciating months of not being able to run. I had a seemingly minor Achilles tendon injury that simply refused to heal, defying every modality I tried. I hoped Andrew, a specialist in sports injuries, could break the deadlock. The simple answer is that in three visits, I was running again, hardly able to believe my good fortune. The more complicated answer runs deeper. Andrew’s work doesn’t just address physical injury; he works on spiritual and emotional injury and stress too. I didn’t realize that my physical injury was bound up with emotional trauma, but he did, and he figured out how to disentangle them so the healing process could start. The process can be painful; emotional injuries that have lodged in your body have to work their way out through muscle and bone, like a physical illness. But it’s also both profound and unexpected. As another of Andrew’s clients said, he is a true healer.

Andrew treated me over a period of about two years for hip and shoulder problems, and he was tremendously helpful. I was impressed with his knowledge and skill, not to mention wonderful “bedside manner” and especially his enthusiasm for staying current in his field.

I loved coming to Andrew. He was a lifesaver in helping me through some back issues when I was pregnant with my first child. A lovely, warm place and Andrew is amazing!!!!

Andrew introduced me to a form of healing which, after years of competitive long distance running and many injuries, I am more than thankful to have discovered! My latest injury, a small tear in my left hamstring, sidelined me for a number of months. After trying rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatories with little results, I finally met Andrew. His approach from the very beginning was completely methodical, precise and extremely professional. Right away the pain eased, and I felt my body finally respond to treatment. Andrew was instrumental in healing my hamstring, and I trust that his acupuncture/massage techniques will keep me healthy and, importantly, keep me running for many decades and miles.

I’ve always wanted to be able to demonstrate clearly to professional dancers when giving them corrections or setting ballets. However, without the level of daily physical preparation that my body was used to when I danced, my body now has moments of rebellion that, however careful I am, need the assistance of experts to ensure I can do my job fully. Andrew’s combination of acupuncture and soft tissue work always made a significant difference to my mobility, helping me undertake my role in the studio at a level of physicality such that I’m not confined to the minimum level of demonstration. With his level of experience with dancers it was always easy to discuss problematic muscles and joints, and reassuring that he ‘got’ what was going on and what was required to improve the situation efficiently and effectively.

Andrew’s massage and acupuncture techniques have seen me successfully through back-to-back marathons seven weeks apart, plus two active pregnancies and a record-breaking racing season in between. He is a veritable genius in his field — a true healer.

Andrew Castellanos has helped my Achilles tendinosis and tendinitis with acupuncture, not only getting the swelling down, but also massaging the area after. His therapeutic work has enabled me to continue dancing at a high level without having to take a break, so I’m able to dance with injury due to the therapeutic work that Andrew does.

A formula matched to the person, not just the symptom.

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest continuous medical traditions in the world, and in many Chinese medicine clinics it sits alongside acupuncture as an equal partner. Herbs work between visits, every day, which is why they're often suggested for long-standing problems with digestion, sleep, the menstrual cycle or energy.

At our Cow Hollow clinic, herbal medicine is Ali Hakimi's field. He is a seventh-generation practitioner of traditional medicine, earned his MS from the Academy of Chinese Culture & Health Sciences in 2017, and studied Classical Chinese Formulas with Dr. Huang Huang and Classical Diagnosis with Dr. Suzanne Robidoux. Herbal care is part of our wider Chinese medicine and wellness care.

What is classical Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine rarely uses one herb on its own. A practitioner prescribes a formula: several herbs, mostly roots, barks, seeds and flowers, combined so that each one supports or balances the others. A formula for poor digestion, for example, might pair herbs that warm and settle the stomach with others that ease bloating.

"Classical" refers to the formulas recorded by the physician Zhang Zhongjing around 200 CE in two texts, the Shang Han Lun and the Jin Gui Yao Lue. Many formulas still used across East Asia today come from these books.

Dr. Huang Huang, who founded the International Jing Fang Institute at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, is one of the best-known teachers of this tradition. His approach matches a formula closely to the whole person: their build, their symptoms and the patterns that link them. That's the way Ali was trained to think, and it's why two people with the same complaint may leave with different formulas.

How an herbal consultation works

Unhurried, thorough and focused on safety. Here's what to expect when you see Ali.

New patient info
  1. Your story

Ali asks about your main concern and the rest of the picture: sleep, digestion, energy, appetite, temperature, stress and, for women, your cycle. Bring a list of every medication and supplement you take.

  2. Classical diagnosis

Expect him to look at your tongue, feel your pulse and ask questions that may seem unrelated. They help him find the pattern behind your symptoms.

  3. Your formula

If herbs suit you, Ali explains what he recommends and why, how to take it, what you might notice and how to get it. Acupuncture is often part of the same visit.

  4. Review and adjust

Formulas change as you change, so follow-up visits matter. How long you take herbs varies, and Ali will give you an estimate after your assessment.

What the research says

Research on Chinese herbal medicine is growing, and some of the most encouraging findings are for digestion and period pain. A 2011 overview of 58 Cochrane reviews found that about half pointed to possible benefits from herbal medicine.

In a 1998 randomized trial in JAMA, 116 people with irritable bowel syndrome took an individualized formula, a standard formula or a placebo for 16 weeks. Both herbal groups improved more than placebo, and the individualized group kept its gains at follow-up, which supports the classical idea of matching a formula to the person.

For period pain, a Cochrane review of 39 trials found promising evidence that herbal formulas may ease menstrual cramps.

How we use herbs

  • We match each formula to you and your goals
  • We don't ask you to stop any medication
  • We set clear goals and check progress
  • If a formula isn't helping, we change course
  • We'll suggest seeing your doctor when that's the better step

Safety: interactions, pregnancy and quality

"Natural" doesn't mean risk-free. Herbs are active substances, which is exactly why they need the same care as any medicine.

Herb-drug interactions. Some herbs change how medications work. The NCCIH notes, for example, that ginkgo taken with the blood thinner warfarin raises the risk of serious bleeding. Tell Ali about every prescription, over-the-counter drug and supplement you take, and tell your doctor and pharmacist that you're taking herbs.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some herbs aren't safe in pregnancy or while nursing, and children need special care. Let us know if you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and check with your OB, midwife or pediatrician.

Sourcing and quality. The NCCIH reports that some Chinese herbal products have been contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, undeclared drugs or the wrong herb, sometimes with serious results. Avoid unlabeled products and online imports of unknown origin, and use formulas only from suppliers that test for purity and identity.

Tell us before starting herbs if you

  • Take blood thinners or any prescription medication
  • Are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have surgery coming up
  • Have had a reaction to an herb or supplement
  • Are asking on behalf of a child

Stop taking a formula and call us, or your doctor, if you feel unwell after starting it.

Chinese herbal medicine FAQ

What is Chinese herbal medicine used for?

People most often ask about herbs for ongoing concerns such as digestive upset and IBS, poor sleep, stress, low energy, period pain and irregular cycles, seasonal allergies and skin flare-ups. Herbs are usually combined with acupuncture and diet and lifestyle advice. Studies have found herbal formulas may help with IBS and period pain. Results vary from person to person, and Ali will give you an estimate after your assessment.

What does "classical formulas" mean?

Classical formulas are those recorded by the physician Zhang Zhongjing around 200 CE in the Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue. Ali studied this tradition with Dr. Huang Huang, whose approach matches each formula closely to the whole person rather than to a single symptom.

Is Chinese herbal medicine safe?

It can be used safely when prescribed by a trained practitioner who checks your health history and medications and uses well-sourced, tested products. Risks include interactions with medications, problems in pregnancy, and contaminated or mislabeled products bought from unreliable sources. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist that you take herbs.

Can I take Chinese herbs with my medications?

Sometimes, but it has to be checked first. Some herbs change how drugs work, and blood thinners are a well-known example. Bring a full list of your prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements to your visit, and tell your doctor and pharmacist about any herbs you start.

Can I take Chinese herbs while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Some herbs are not safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Tell us if you're pregnant, trying to conceive or nursing, and check with your OB, midwife or doctor. We'll be cautious, and in many cases we'll suggest acupuncture without herbs.

What do Chinese herbs taste like, and how do I take them?

Formulas come in several forms, such as granules stirred into hot water, pills or tablets, and raw herbs simmered into a tea. Teas and granules can taste earthy or bitter, while pills avoid the taste altogether. Ali will explain which form suits you and how to take it.

How long until Chinese herbs work?

It depends on the problem and how long you've had it. Some people notice changes within a few weeks, while long-standing concerns take longer. Ali will review your progress at follow-up visits and adjust the formula, and he'll give you an estimate after your assessment.

Do I need acupuncture to get herbs?

Not always, but most of our patients combine the two because they work well together. Call us to talk about the best way to start with Ali.

How much does Chinese herbal medicine cost?

Please call us to ask about herbal consultations with Ali, and ask him about the cost of any formula before you begin. Our 60-minute initial acupuncture and assessment is $225 and a 45-minute follow-up is $195. We provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement and accept HSA and FSA cards.
